Helical Fusion signs MOU with Dawonsys

Looking toward a future business partnership

Helical Fusion has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with DAWONSYS Co.,Ltd. (Headquarters: Ansan-city, Gyeonggi-do; CEO: Park, SunSoon). Dawonsys is a qualified and extensively experienced Korean company for power electronics technology and being globally renowned for designing and manufacturing steady-state and pulsed power systems which are used in fusion energy devices and particle accelerators.

Helical Fusion's goal is to create a first-of-a-kind steady-state fusion machine that can generate electricity without greenhouse gas emissions or long-lived nuclear waste. We utilize a specialized magnetic confinement technique known as Helical-Stellarator (Heliotron), one of the magnetic confinement approaches, which uses superconducting coils to confine high-temperature plasma. Fusion power plants offer significant benefits: they are inherently safe and have a low environmental impact, positioning fusion as a promising next-generation technology.

Purpose of the MOU
The objective of this MOU is to establish the fundamental principles for a meaningful and collaborative partnership between the two parties in developing the fusion project. It also defines the specific roles and responsibilities of Dawonsys and Helical Fusion in the planning and execution of the project.

Looking toward a future business partnership with Helical Fusion, Dawonsys will provide technical consultation for high-voltage power supplies needed in fusion heating systems, such as high-power microwave generators (gyrotrons and klystrons), along with high-current power supplies for superconducting coils.

Helical Fusion will lead its development plans for fusion power plants, potentially procuring and utilizing Dawonsys’ gyrotron high-power microwave generator, and DC power supplies.

The MOU is effective for two years from signing date (July 26, 2024). Both parties are committed to establishing a successful partnership for developing fusion power plant.

With over 70 years of heritage in Helical Stellarator research and development in Japan, Helical Fusion is pioneering world-first advancements in fusion technology. By leveraging its unique expertise in comprehensive machine design and development, Helical Fusion stands at the forefront of innovation in the global fusion industry.
